How to Organize a Small Kitchen

A small kitchen works when the things you use most are the easiest to reach. This is a practical order of operations for reorganizing one in an afternoon.

Work in zones, not cupboards

A small kitchen is easiest to organize by activity rather than by cupboard. Cooking, washing up, making drinks and food storage each want their own cluster of tools. Once you work in zones, it becomes obvious that the pan you use daily should not be behind the one you use twice a year.

The four-step reset

1. Empty the worst cupboard. Not all of them. Pick the one that annoys you most, empty it completely, and put back only what you have used in the last three months. Everything else goes into a box out of the kitchen for a month — if you have not missed it by then, you do not need it.

2. Give the counter back. The single biggest win in a small kitchen is a clear work surface. A tiered shelf lifts plates, jars and mugs upwards, and the counter underneath becomes usable again.

3. Fix the drawers. Utensils need compartments, not a drawer. Set dividers to the widths of the things you actually own, then leave one section deliberately empty — that gap is what stops the drawer becoming a catch-all again.

4. Deal with under the sink. It is the least organized space in most kitchens and the easiest to fix. A sliding two-tier caddy turns a shallow space stacked two deep into storage you can see in one movement.

A note on vertical space

Above the counter, between the top cupboard and the ceiling, and on the inside of cupboard doors, you have space you are not using. Narrow open shelves and over-door racks are cheap, reversible and ideal for a rental.

What to keep on show

Leave the things you use daily visible and put the rest behind a door. A cramped kitchen feels calmer when the visible items are the ones you reach for every morning.
