The Best Ways to Make Use of Vertical Space
Your apartment is not too small. It is just that most of its volume sits above head height, unused. Here is how to work upwards.

Why vertical space is different
Floor space is expensive and shared. Vertical space is free, quiet and — in a rental — usually the part you are allowed to change, because it can be done with adhesive rather than a drill.
Start above the eye line
Stand in each room and look up. Anything above roughly six feet is space you own but never use. That is where seasonal items, spare bedding, luggage and cleaning supplies should live, in labelled containers you can see into.
Then work at eye level
The band between waist and eye height is the most useful storage in any home, and it is usually occupied by a single row of objects on a shelf. Narrow open shelves and wall racks multiply that band without taking any floor.
Three principles
Keep it shallow. Deep shelves hide their contents. Anything deeper than about twelve inches should be divided or it will collect the things you forgot you owned.
Group in threes. Odd-numbered, uneven groupings of objects look deliberate; rows of identical items look like a shop. Both work — mixing them does not.
Leave air above each group. A gap between the top item and the shelf above is what makes a shelf read as organised rather than full.
The final check
Walk into the room and look at the floor. If you can see the floor, and the eye-line band is used, the room will feel twice the size it is — no renovation required.
